Breathalyzers Personal Alcohol Analyzers

Frequently Asked Questions
About Alcohol Testers

FAQ
1. What is the difference between these breathalyzers?

The AlcoScan AL5000, AlcoMate Prestige and AlcoMate Pro breathalyzers offer three different levels of application. The AlcoMate Prestige is our top-of-the-line professional flagship product and is the first and only breathalyzer to offer Pre-Calibrated Replaceable Alcohol Sensor Modules. This means that it is the only reliable handheld product that never requires recalibration: Simply snap out an old sensor, snap in a new one, and you're ready to test! The Prestige is appropriate for heavy professional/industrial use, or for general consumers looking for a top-notch product.

After the AlcoMate Prestige, the AlcoScan AL5000 is a high-quality breathalyzer suitable for simple personal use or for moderate professional use. The AL5000 features an equivalent sensor to the AlcoMate Prestige, but the AL5000 does not offer replaceable modules, so the unit must be sent in for periodic calibration (at least once per year, or as you approach 250~300 tests).

The AlcoMate Pro has been a strong seller in the breathalyzer market for years, and offers reliable, quality results. The AlcoMate Pro is used by law enforcement professionals, health clinics and general consumers.

We also offer car interlock breathalyzers, coin-operated breathalyzers and fuel-cell breathalyzers for specific needs.

2. What is the BAC limit for driving?
The limit for BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) allowable while driving has been established at less than 0.08% BAC for almost all regions of the United States.

3. Can I drive after drinking if BAC is less than 0.08%?
No, we don't recommend driving after drinking. There is NO "safe" amount of alcohol to drink before driving.

4. What is calibration?
All breathalyzers or alcohol testers require routine checkups on the functionality of alcohol sensors to prevent inaccurate readings. There are some alcohol breathalyzers in the market which are designed so that they are unable to be calibrated. These breathalyzers may put your life and the lives of your loved ones at risk. Make sure you buy reliable, accurate, personal breathalyzers such as those provided by Breathalcolyzer.com.

5. Which alcohol sensors are used by the AlcoScan and AlcoMate series of breathalyzers?
Alcohol sensors used in the AlcoMate and AlcoScan series integrate state-of-the-art oxide semiconductor technology. These breathalyzer sensors were developed and designed to accurately detect and reliably analyze alcohol in a breath sample. There are alcohol analyzers that utilize sensors that detect alcohol along with other substances which may report inaccurate BAC readings.

The AlcoMate Prestige is a one-of-a-kind device that uses an oxide semiconductor sensor that is embedded in a Pre-Calibrated Replaceable Sensor Module. This means that when you would normally be scheduled to send your device in for calibration, you can instead simply snap out your old module, snap in your new module, and you're ready to test. Not only is there a great advantage for you in time and cost savings, but you are also installing a brand new sensor. Standard calibration restores accuracy, but since the sensor is not replaced, residue buildup and sensor wear lead eventually to ineffectiveness in many cases. The Prestige solves this problem by providing sensor modules to last you a lifetime!

Shopping Tips for Breathalyzers

1) Check calibration function: Self-calibration cannot reliably maintain accuracy for even a moderate period of time, which is why the function is reserved for mostly "novelty"-grade devices. All breathalyzers require calibration (except for the AlcoMate Prestige). The life of a breathalyzer will be limited to only about 250 tests if it does not have a calibration function.

2) Accuracy: AlcoMate and AlcoMate Pro can display 2 or 3 decimal places upon customer request. The phrases "3-digit accuracy" or "4-digit accuracy" are potentially misleading as the method of display has nothing to do with the accuracy of the alcohol sensor. The accuracy and the quality of the alcohol sensor being used for AlcoMate and AlcoMate Pro have been proven in the global market place for over 3 years. It has been and still is the best selling semiconductor breathalyzer on the market. Do not be mislead by the faulty product descriptions and/or by other unproven products.

3) Warranty: Ensures at least 3 months of Manufacturer’s warranty period for return services.

4) The AlcoMate Pro, the AlcoMate Prestige and the AlcoScan AL2500 are the only FDA 510(k) Certified and DOT Approved breathalyzers. A breathalyzer is considered a medical device and requires FDA 510(k) certification and DOT approval.
